I have taught Bible Study for over 35 years and haven't come across another book so clearly describing how to live the Christian life aside from the Bible itself.

About the Author
Louis Ginzberg was born in Kovno (now Kaunas), Lithuania, in 1873. He began his university studies in mathematics but eventually turned to the study of religion. His doctoral dissertation, which documented the survival of various Jewish elaborations of the Bible in the writings of the Church Fathers, prefigured his later work. He immigrated to America in 1899 and became a renowned Judaic scholar. He died in New York City in 1953.

If you are a lover of Jewish history, Christian history, and are open minded enough to listen to legends and glean possible truth from ancient spoken tradition that has been finally gathered into one resource for us to read, then this book will be amazing to you. This is one of my favorite books of all time.

This edition of "A Farewell to Arms" collects the 39 to 47 different endings have become part of literary lore, but heretofore they have never been published together in their entirety, according to his longtime publisher, Scribner. It is also an attempt to redirect some of the attention paid in recent years to Hemingway’s swashbuckling, hard-drinking image -- through fictional depictions in the best-selling novel “The Paris Wife” and the Woody Allen film “Midnight in Paris,” for instance -- back to his sizable body of work.

For close readers of Hemingway the different endings are a fascinating glimpse into how the novel could have concluded on a different note, sometimes more blunt and sometimes more optimistic. And since modern authors tend to produce their work on computers, the new edition also serves as an instance of "they just don't make 'em [authors] like that anymore". (When asked in the 1958 Paris Review interview with George Plimpton what had stumped him, Hemingway said, “Getting the words right.”)

The endings range from a short sentence or two to several paragraphs. In No. 1, “The Nada Ending,” Hemingway wrote, “That is all there is to the story. Catherine died and you will die and I will die and that is all I can promise you.” The “Live-Baby Ending,” listed as No. 7, concludes, “There is no end except death and birth is the only beginning.” And in No. 34, the “Fitzgerald ending,” suggested by Hemingway’s friend F. Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway wrote that the world “breaks everyone,” and those “it does not break it kills.” “It kills the very good and very gentle and the very brave impartially,” Hemingway wrote. “If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.”

Where did this guy come from?

Great book! Another Hemingway classic. Man, when's his next book coming out? I can't wait! Anyway, I love his very journalistic style of prose. He writes in short sentences with a very "get to the point" attitude. Great read for anyone of an advanced level of reading. Will not get much out of it if you are not willing to think.

I really liked reading this book. It is about a man who has spent all of his adult life in the service. He has survived wars, both on the battlefield and on personal levels. This story takes place during a car ride when the main character, Richard, is under a great deal of stress and in pain from a heart condition. He is recalling the previous days that he spent with a young woman that he loves. He shares his thoughts and feeling, memories of how the weekend events occurred with the reader. Richard is the only point of view the reader has, and he is in pain, fearing his impending death, so the reader has a pointed (and restricted) view. He is facing the idea that the chronic heart problems he has will probably end his life, and he is recalling many of his regrets, both professional and personal, to the female character and the reader. The reader gets more information than does his lover because we have some insight into what he thinks, but isn't saying. The female character seems flat, but really I think that is just because she is seen through his eyes, and he is under a lot of stress. I really liked this book. It is Hemingway, his writing is emotional and detailed. It provokes thought about myself and how do I affect the people around me. What are they going through that I'm not aware of?
