Whee for all things Fallout!
By Jonathon Miles
It's just a little quick survival guide booklet (pocket-size) filled with the same dark-humored 50's kitsch I've come to love ever sine "Wasteland" came out (for those of you confused, Wasteland was the precursor to the first Fallout game). The booklet provides some basic tips for surviving in Fallout 3, but is infinitely more fun to pull out and show confused friends.

Two down, guessing one more to go.

Greetings;
What I mean by my title is that there were some 3 items that you could get free way back in the day for pre-ordering fallout 3. That isn't to say the survival edition from amazon-exclusive to amazon which came in a big-big box(think Skyrim's collectors edition with the big ol' dragon statue of Alduin) with a pip boy 3000 alarm clock/mountable wrist band(if you know what a pip boy 3000 then you know what I am talking about) as well as the normal fare that came with the regular collector's edition set(bobblehead, bonus dvd with exclusive behind-the-scenes content and it all came with the game in a small metal lunch box). Anyways, there was available an actual cd soundtrack to the game(which oddly enough doesn't in fact include bob brosby's dead hearts and gentle people which you hear in one of the primary commercials for the game which I would argue to be one of the better songs tied to it-put to the background animation it just is awesome), a fallout 3 bottle opener which comes in a small dvd case with a paper insert that talks a bit about the game itself and finally, this little pocket booklet. It is designed to be as real to the game world as possible-the people of the massive underground vaults were never really meant to be saved, rather they were test subjects. The very idea that they should ever be allowed to leave is just...No. If you follow the game play long enough you can even at one point argue with the vault 101's overseer that people need to be allowed to leave otherwise there would be forced inbreeding which when brought up in the face of his own daughter there beside you probably was more powerful than was shown in his response, but all the same.
This little booklet is just that- a thin little booklet. Something meant to be carried by a person stupid enough to leave the safety and comfort of the underground vault. It is only about 43 pages long, the last 4 or 5 or so are just for note taking. It gives the very strong impression that while a lot of proposed research had in fact been done in the state of affairs in the world after it should be safe enough to leave the vault, that those in charge didn't want you to go in the first place. That is to say, they give you this booklet and then let you go over it and decide to go or stay with a disclaimer towards the end. The section about being essentially a creature of the night and needing to shield your eyes from the sun was interesting enough-not suggesting that the vault would provide glasses but instead suggesting that one just shield their eyes by holding their hands up by about their brows. Reading this, one would almost expect to see a diagram of standing, stretching, bending, leaning, placing one's head between one's own buttocks and kissing said butt goodbye at any given moment.
That is to say, it is an interesting little read. Nothing too special, as the other reviewer mentioned, it would probably be better to pull it out and suprise friends as it doesn't really have anything to do with the game play so much of the game itself, but was probably meant more as a pull to help people familairize themselves with the dynamics of the fallout world especially as Bethesda imagined it after taking it over(they had originally been developing Oblivion for the psp when they got word that they officially had the rights to the fallout franchise and dumped the project already in its beta stages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had seen screen captions in magazines and had been checking daily on amazon for updates to its release date until it just finally went away as a listing). For those of you who don't know already, Interplay had made fallout 1, 2, tactics, brotherhood of steel and the incomplete and abandoned fallout 3 van buren and while I don't recall the dates involved in Van buren, brotherhood of steel came out back in about 2003. That means there had been nothing up until 2008. This little book was just a fun way to introduce the series to new fans and try to lure back older ones who knew the series as more of an old style rpg game grid turn based combat style series. Reading the booklet over, you will find nothing of any such thing mentioned in it and I gotta say, that is great.
Last words? I wanted this little booklet bad enough to pay out abou $55. Is it worth it? I gave it a lot of thought, but then this was the second booklet of its kind that I had seen in about 3 years now. While I wasn't thrilled about the price(Found the bottle opener on here for about $9.99 plus shipping) I was still more or less willing to pay it. Just need to get my grubby mitts on the cd now too. Good luck as there isn't even a listing for it on this site and have only seen it as a part of a much more expensive set on eBay.
Thank you...
