a violent life for animals in the middle of Shaker farmland

Norman Mailer titled his novel about a hunting trip "Why are We in Vietnam?" and I'm tempted to say this gripping young adult novel could have the same subtitle - or something like "Why do Men Kill?" The young Shaker boy, a bumpkin on a poor, low-tech farm, is inculcated with good Shaker values of humility, hard work, cooperativeness, and high standards for his work, but bumps up against the contradictions that come with the belief system in how animals on the farm are treated. Although Rob hunts, and his father is a "hands on" hog butcher, Rob also feels deep companionship and compassion for his pet pig, the cat, ox, and cow on the farm, and the neighbor's twin steers, which he helps deliver inadvertantly.
In this coming of age book, as he turns from 12 to 13, he sees that men can be gratuitously cruel toward animals, and after naively participating in "weaseling" a dog, he finally draws the line and feels great remorse. Ironically, as his ethics sharpen, he is also growing into "manhood" and is forced to accept the brutal rape of his pet pig and eventually her killing as part of the philosophy that a man just "has to do what he has to do."
At the end, we see him performing all of a man's duties, presiding over his father's death and vowing to continue in his footsteps. We see that change will probably not occur, and that he will be forced to continue the mixture of cruelty and care that goes with animal husbandry; his life will only be a little better than his dad's.
I do not see the book as "sexist" at all - but as a warning and a parable about how culture is perpetuated even when we are repulsed by aspects of it, through a sense of loyalty toward elders who may not be so honorable, and through peer pressure. How do we break out and evolve to a better, kinder way? That is the deep unanswered question posed by this book.
Read by young adults, it would captivate some and deeply disturb others. The humorous lines in the first half of the book caused me to laugh out loud, and the wonderful dialect shows much in common with AAVE, interestingly. But the second half loses the humor and has several scenes of such bloody behavior toward animals, all commonplace in this poverty striken environment, that it is truly haunting and horribly disturbing.
There are also details of how this farm community built things that will be fascinating. I was most startled to read that this poor family carefully removed the chopped nuts from the stomach of the squirrel they had shot, and sprinkled them over a cake, which they then ate. Do people do that? Hard to imagine such a level of hunger.
I give this book five stars because it has stayed with me and caused much reflection and thought, and the language is brilliant.

A book that will never die

Robert Newton Peck wrote A Day No Pigs Would Die as a tribute to his father in a fictional auto-biographical style where he is a young farm boy in Vermont. His father, Haven Peck, a slow, pious farmer, slaughters pigs in order to supplement his meager income as a farmer; however, he slowly gets sicker and sicker. Meanwhile, young Robert fills his bright childhood days roving, exploring, avoiding chores, and playing with his newly-acquired piglet, Pinky. The excitement of Robert’s innocent life is enabled only by an active imagination and appreciation for the world’s beauty while his life is also punctuated by jarring events that teach him of life’s harshness. One such event is a horrible winter where food for the family runs scarce and Pinky might be the only option. You need to read it to find out what happens!
The book’s length runs around 170 pages, but even though it’s slim, the book introduces rich characters with poignant dialogue. Haven Peck, the father, is one of my favorite characters since he so beautifully portrays a noble farmer—perhaps in another age or circumstance he would be Scipio. He’s a character who beautifies humility, which is a welcome relief to our modern day obsession with success.
You can read this book in a day and then want to reread it a week later because there’s a lot of ruminating and insights into your own personal life. My wife and I reread it every year! It’s perfect for teenagers and those who are impressionable and need a solid foundation to build a life on, but all persons can learn from it.

Laugh and Cry

I LOVE this book! I love the main character, Rob, and his 12yo thinking and misunderstandings, his analogies and speech. I love the quiet, gentle, strong, hard-working example of his father. This book makes me laugh out loud and cry until I can't breathe. THAT'S a good book!
P.S. Yes, it is graphic. I wouldn't have my young children read it. But it's not graphic in a bad way. This is just realistic animal husbandry and farm life. I do want all of my children to read it once they're mature enough.
