Isa Chandra Moskowitz has been cooking up trouble in New York City since the eighties, when she discovered punk rock and vegetarianism. Her public access cooking show, the Post Punk Kitchen, filmed in her small Brooklyn apartment, has been a smash hit since it hit the airwaves in 2003. She has been inspiring fans of vegan food and loud music ever since. The Post Punk Kitchen won VegNews' Veggies award for Best Cooking DVD and has been featured in media from Bust to Herbivore to Gothamist.com. Vegan Cupcakes Have Taken Over My World!

I love love LOVE this book. The recipes are simple and perfect, every time; I have had VCTOtW for about a month and a half now, and despite at least weekly bakings, haven't had a single recipe fail yet. Not one. Since I bought it I seriously can't stop baking and am beginning to fear for my waistline!

I would like to second another reviewer who pointed out that the recipes don't ask you to use egg replacers or other "substitutions" common in vegan baking (usually because someone is trying to veganize a non-vegan recipe); instead, the recipes are just designed vegan from the ground up, and call for simple ingredients that anyone would have (oil, baking powder, etc.). Also, there are tons of beautiful color pictures of finished cupcakes throughout, which is one of the most important things about a cookbook, to me. Then, too, they suggest enough variations on each cupcake recipe (there's 6 suggested ways to dramatically alter the chocolate cupcake recipe alone) that this book will keep you occupied for quite a long time.

Since every baker likes a little external validation, here's mine: I have gotten absolute raves on every cupcake I have made so far, and most of these raves were from non-vegans who were comparing my vegan cupcakes with regular [non-vegan] cupcakes. For example, last night I fed a chocolate cupcake with cookies 'n cream frosting (vegan buttercream frosting with Newman's O's mixed in... this is a recipe from the book, obviously) to a friend who didn't just enjoy it, but was absolutely WOWED. "Geeze, it's amazing what they're doing without dairy or eggs these days; these are better than regular cupcakes" was one comment that I particularly appreciated because most vegan desserts can taste good, but in my experience it's the rare vegan dessert that can taste identical or even BETTER than the regular omni thing.

I would recommend this book to anyone, vegans and omni's alike, because even if you're not vegan (or lactose intolerant), the cupcakes taste fabulous. The recipes are so simple they're basically idiot-proof, and I have seriously never in my life had better chocolate cupcakes than the ones I made from this book: moist and fluffy and ooh... just perfect. And I'm not even a chocolate person.

Anyway, do yourself (and everyone in your life who will be eating your baked goods) a favor and buy this wonderful book! I'd give it 10 stars if they'd let me...

Vegan Cupcakes Have Taken Over My World

I am not a vegan, but I loved Vegan with a Vengeance...and I couldn't wait for VCTOTW -- this book is awesome. So far I've only made the basic vanilla cupcakes but the frosting alone (vegan buttercream and the chocolate buttercream -- couldn't resist making both) was worth the price of the cookbook and MORE! And, to top it all off, I made the first batch in honor of my son's birthday and neither of my kids even blinked an eye to notice that these cupcakes were anything other than YUMMY!

P.S. I have always been intimidated by cupcakes (and especially frosting) -- but these recipes made it all seem easier, somehow.

Ok Isa, we need to talk...

Isa is ruining my number one excuse for declining dessert, and most vegans know exactly what I'm talking about. Picture this scenario that all vegans have experienced countless times: you're at the office potluck/halloween party/family gathering. Post-meal, the desserts come flying to the table. As everyone lifts their forks grabbing their favorite decadent dessert, they stare at you. The strange vegan. Those who don't know you approach, and with a warm smile, offer you a slice of NY cheesecake. You decline politely, saying, "sorry, it has dairy so I don't eat cheesecake." Well, based on Isa's doing, I can no longer sit out from the dessert scene. I don't know if I should salute her or throw my bathroom scale at her since I no longer want to use it after baking from her new book.

Similar to the reasons I raved about her cookbook, Isa's charming book of cupcake recipes is stellar. First of all, I challenge all omnivores out there to think of 75 possible cupcake combinations. Now take away the milk. And eggs. Oh, and one can't use any butter, so nix that too. Ah... that's better. Now one is introduced to the vegan-style baking that Isa makes so effortless for the rest of us who are ingredient-challenged.

Before I learned how to bake vegan cupcakes from this book, I would trudge down to Sticky Fingers bakery in DC and cough up $4 for a product reminiscent of a 25-cent Hostess cupcake. While at the bakery I would hand over my money, gritting my teeth and reminding myself how lucky I am to live in a vegan-accepting city. Then, I would take a bite back to the 4th grade, pre-Vegan era.

Not only does this book make baking a lot more economical and bring back those childhood memories, but these things are really frickin good. In the mood for fruity cupcakes? No problem. Craving rich chocolate buttercream? Simple. And delicious. And awesome. For all you closet vegans living in the heart of the south (and I'm sure you're out there), bake some of these cupcakes for the most die-hard fans of banana fosters and it will truly rock their world. I baked a variety of the cupcakes for a dinner party and when people saw them they asked when I stopped being vegan.

What I'm trying to say: baking these delicious cupcakes are easy and the end result is phenominal. Not only is this cookbook revolutionary in that I can't think of another dedicated to the undiscovered art of cupcakes, but it's also one step closer to saving vegans from being known as the strange eater at the dinner table. Thank you, Isa Moskowitz, even if my growing thighs do not. How about for your next cookbook you introduce a low-fat vegan cookbook for those getting out of their cupcake-induced sugar comas?

My View:
This is the second book in the new Fortunes of Texas series. The first book Plain Jane and the Playboy by Marie Ferrarella was released last month. A few years back I started reading the Fortunes of Texas series and was hooked. The books are individual stories, but are linked together by a mystery. The clues to the mystery are revealed in each book until the series ends.

When I first got hooked on the Fortune series I had purchased the books used at the local library. Of course, the whole series wasn't available, so I had to search for the outdated books to find out what was happening in the mystery. It was a challenge at the time, but eventually I was able to find all the books online. I really enjoyed reading all of them.

The new Fortunes series follows the same theme of having individual stories and a continuing mystery. Red Rock, the Texas town where the Fortunes of Texas started, is where it's all happening again in this series. Darr Fortune, of the California Fortunes, came to Red Rock three years ago. (If you didn't know they are from all over the world.) Darr is a local fireman, who just can't help himself when he sees a damsel in distress. When he meets Bethany it's no different. He knows she's got problems and he just wants to help. We also get to meet his oh so sexy brother, commitment weary Nick, who's worried that his little brother is making the same mistakes in his life that Darr has made before. Nick's story comes next month.

Bethany is looking to stay lost, but she could really use someone to lean on. Someone with shoulders as broad as Darr's could just be that man. Valentine's Fortune is a fun book that doesn't get too sappy about the holiday, but brings true romance to life. The author does a nice job making the characters real and the reader will enjoy getting the chance to meet up with some of the older series members again. Ahhh! There's just nothing like a big strong fireman. And from Texas no less.

Benet wrote this a while back, but it's worth reading, particularly in view of some of the shenangians going on in the Monica affair. Stone sold his soul and lived a long and fruitful life, the devil not bothering him at all due to the promised eventual payoff.

Came time for the payoff, Jabez Stone hired the F. Lee Bailey of the time, silver toungued orator Daniel Webster. The jury was picked by the Devil, no voir dire there. And Webster started his talk. It's good reading today if you can find it.

I have searched hard for a Complete Works of Benet, prose and poetry. His ouevre is not so great that it should be difficult to do. There are many other good stories in there, Johnny Pye and the Fool Killer, By the Waters of Babylon, and poems, too, John Brown's Body of course, but How Hillbilly Jim Won The Georgia Fiddler's Contest, too, and a host of others. Benet is not an author to shove away on the back shelves and forget. He deserves to be read.

Great Short story I first read as a teenager.It won the O'henry award when it was published and was also made into a movie in the early 1940s.Moral of the story? Be carefull what you wish for and if you think youll out smart the Devil, think again.He's been around a long long time.In this story the Protagonist is lucky enough to have Daniel Webster as his Attorney in his case againt Satan.If your thinking about trading your soul for wealth,Fame or Vengence.Read this first and do your reasearch.A deal is a deal and he will enforce his contract wheather you like it or not.You may say to yourself ,Ill just get someone like Daniel Webster.Good luck, this is a fairy tale and a pretty good one.Check it out.The re-print is pretty cheap and I think Peguin Publishers still carrys it too.If your a fan of Tragedy's like Sophocles,Dickens or Shakespere you will like this. Easy read one night and done.

Just out of rehab and nearly bankrupt, 34-year-old Regina Burns receives a much-needed job offer from motivational speaker Beth Davis, a former employer. The two women were accompanied by Beth's 20-something only child, known to all as Son. Regina fell in love with Son, but agreed to hide the romance from disapproving Beth. When they were discovered, Son broke up with Regina rather than upset his mother, driving Regina back home to D.C. and into a cocaine habit. Just as she is on the verge of losing everything, word of Son's death in New York on September 11 shocks Regina into rehab. When Beth decides to donate Son's papers to his alma mater, Morehouse College, she hires Regina to coordinate the project. Upon arriving in Atlanta, Regina runs into charismatic Blue Hamilton, an ex-singer who becomes her landlord. Blue wields an odd power over a peaceful city enclave bordered by threatening neighborhoods-and over Regina as well. As she works quickly to organize Son's papers, Regina must decide what to do with growing evidence of a secret life he kept hidden from Beth. At the same time Regina fears for Blue's safety when neighborhood tensions begin to escalate. The novel takes a creative path to a predictable ending, neatly resolving several plot lines. Regina is a delightful narrator: frank, self-aware and keenly observant. Cleage stumbles with the story's brief detour into the supernatural, but this distracting misstep only slightly diminishes the story's appeal.

Classic Cleage!

Pearl Cleage's latest novel, Some Things I Never Thought I'd Do is a tale of recovery, redemption, and a love that transcends time. Regina Burns, a talented speechwriter, is fresh out of a Washington, DC rehabilitation center and ready to begin her life anew. She has rebounded from cocaine addiction propelled during a period of depression after breaking up with her fiancé and having her habit fueled by her inheritance from her recently deceased parents. Desperate for money, she embraces responsibility and reluctantly accepts a short-term job in Atlanta with her "would-have-been" mother-in-law (who was really the cause of the break-up) to save her family's home from foreclosure. If this sounds like a challenge, it is; however add in her visionary aunt's premonition regarding Regina's destiny to save a damsel in distress, slay a dragon, and meet a handsome man with "the ocean in his eyes" and the level of complexity, suspense, and drama goes through the roof!
This novel is in sync with Cleage's other works, in that she exposes human nature to the bare bones - she skilfully wraps issues surrounding love, class, sexuality, and race into a wonderful story. Her characters are warm and likeable; her sense of humor is witty and perfectly timed; and her pacing is great. It is a delightful "feel good" novel in that in the end the prophesy is fulfilled, cosmic justice is served, and a message on doing the right thing is delivered. This is a wonderful summertime read!

This was a nice story, but almost TOO nice

This was a nice story, but almost TOO nice. The protagonist is trying to fix up her life, and enters a world where everything is falling into place. However, its almost too good of a setting. There's the slight drama over the one potential political issue, but everything seems to wrap itself up too quickly. I felt like I was left hanging at the end. The story just kind of stopped. I was reading it on a kindle and wasn't paying attention to where I was in the story. Then all of a sudden it just ended without fully resolving all the situations.

Just took a wrong turn

This book is not what i thought it would be. The story of a recovering drug addict trying to start over was a good start, but her story just took a wrong turn, or didnt know where to turn. The storyline was all over the place. Ms Cleage didnt seem to know which direction she wanted take the book. And there were a couple of unanswered questions that would have made the book interesting.

1. What was the "coming from a past life" story about?

What did that have to do with the main story. She just dropped that in there for shock value and didnt develop it. And that was the most compelling part of the book. The whole concept had no place in this book, it just seemed out of place. Unless she plans to write a sequal continuing that part of the story.

2. What happened between the main character and here ex boyfriend that drove her to become a crack head? This part of the story is left to our imaginations.

There are other things that just dont add up. It took me a week to finish this, which is unusual for a Pearl Cleage book.

Maybe Babylon sisters will be better.
