A Part of the Picture Not Available Elsewhere

Let me say at the outset that Reichian therapy has been enormously helpful to me- perhaps even given me my life back.
Ms Ollendorf provides just the facts as she knew them. She has done a great service because most of the people around Reich seemingly had great difficulty describing him plainly. Myron Sharaf's biography is a long hard-working attempt to describe Reich indirectly. Ms Ollendorf clearly, plainly, almost tersely records the good and the bad, and seems incredibly _un_ bitter about it all.
Even a genius is not entitled to have inconvenient biographical information left out of a biography. Reich dealt with the most personal aspects of life, it is legitimate that his personal life be compared to his teachings. That is, the reader of this book is likely to do that, Ms Ollendorf refrains from much evaluation. From reading his letters and diaries, it is pretty clear that Reich had a psychopathic character. This is not not meant to be a moral judgement but a descriptive statement. Look up psychopathic character in the work of Robert Hare or Alexander Lowen. What Ms Ollendorf shows, that Reich did not in his own work, is how it is to be on the receiving side. No doubt Reich's intentions were very good and his ideas valid, but Reich should be accountable for his results as well.
For instance, despite his ideas about non-monogamy and his practical and avid implementation of non-monogamy, Reich was pathologically jealous, and he berated Ilse for hours demanding that she confess to infidelity. It was pathological jealousy that eventually wore out Elsa Lindbergh in his previous relationship. This is not by way demonizing Reich, but those who wish to deify him and shout down any information to the contrary are doing a disservice to those who come after him but who want to implement his ideas in full awareness of how he lived his ideas.

Ugh

Impossible to finish this book. The real question how and
why do we stay connected to the women in our lives? This is a bitter, nasty book by someone who should have known better.
Obviously hurt by Reich's dynamic personality she complains
in a tortured voice; how pitifull. Et Tu Ilsa. Really its late.
So browze this book to see what Reich had to put up with.
To get a true picture of Reich you have to be dammed lucky to
find a therapist who went through Reich's therapy. All his great books are a road map to his therapy.

Worth a Look.

I read another review of this item, which said something like "et tu, Ilse," and was expecting something less than what I actually found. I have read most of Reich's writings. As well as the correspondence with A. S. Neill. I have enormous respect for Reich, and his work. But the continual lifetime persecutions all over Europe and the U.S. eventually took its toll on the man. The author's exposition feels very detail oriented and in line with my other readings. This is a very readable and interesting biography of a Pioneer by someone who was as close to him as they come. She is clearly articulate and intelligent; her respect for his work comes through. And for some of his work, she could not follow, says so and leaves it for others to judge.
This probably is not the first place you are going to go to learn about Reich, but if like me, you have become facinated with this brillant and unstoppable groundbreaker, this volume is not to be missed.
