Millennium, schmillennium, Secret Love is the big reason to ring in 2000! All of you long-time Brenda Jackson fans know exactly what I mean--this is the one we have been waiting for, the whole story behind the romance and marriage of Diamond Swain, sought after Hollywood goddess, and Jake Madaris, the wealthy cattle-ranching member of the estimable Madaris family.
If you are among the few who have never read any of Ms Jackson's scintillating romances, you are in for a treat. Ms Jackson writes wonderfully--her books are full of humor, romance, suspense and a strong love of family. Her characters are memorable and endearing and since her stories are interconnected, you get to visit a bit with favorites from past novels. In Jake and Diamond's case, we have been wondering over the course of several books just how this couple got together and why their love was so secret. And believe me, it was worth the wait!
Sexy, sweet, passionate and exciting, this book is one that you will read in one sitting. I have to confess that Jacob is my favorite of the Madaris men, although they are all so wonderful it's like saying I like blue M&M's better than the rest...I love all those men and the fabulous women they wed. And you will too, if you don't already. Don't keep Secret Love a secret--read it and get the word out that 2000 is off to a sizzling start!

This story of the secretly married couple we first met in Eternally Yours -- sexy rancher Jake Madaris and beautiful movie star Diamond Swain -- just HAD to be told. Well, Ms. Jackson has told it and it was more than worth the wait! Jake Madaris is so AWESOME he'll have you packing your bags and heading for Texas to find a Madaris man of your own. Diamond is the type of woman we all want to be -- especially during those STEAMY love scenes. I don't smoke, but I felt like I needed a cigarette after a few of the HOT, HOT, HOT ones. Brenda Jackson fans will get to catch up with ALL her other characters while falling in love with her newest ones in this truly touching story. I couldn't put this book down. This is definitely one of the very best romances that I've ever read and it's definitely Ms. Jackson's best work to date. Buy two copies of this book -- one for you to enjoy and one for the man in your life to take a lesson or two from !

Those Madaris Men!!!!

I only recently became an avid reader of African American romance novels, my first Brenda Jackson book was True Love which got me to reading other books she had written. What can you say about those Madaris men and their friends? When Jake's first marriage ended it left him bitter and leary of city women, he never believed a woman could love him or his rancher way of life especially a beautiful world renowned African American actress like Diamond Swain. Diamond needed a retreat where she could escape the pressures of Hollywood, her friend Sterling Hamilton knew just the place, his friend Jake Madaris' ranch where he himself had found solitude. Jake was not thrilled with Diamond invading his peaceful existence, but the woman Diamond proved to be was far different from the glamor and glitz of her celebrity status. Diamond found Jake's manner and strength appealing but she was afraid if she shared his life it would jepordize his quiet lifestyle. Jake and Diamond could not help their love for one another but Diamond's need to protect their private life forced Jake to accept keeping their love and marriage a secret.

After Diamond's safety is threatened by an overzealous fan, she realizes she has kept Jake a prisoner of her love forcing him to change his life because of her fear. They decide to first disclose their marriage to Jake's family then announce it to the public, however, all is not well there is now a threat against Jake by a demented and confused man.

Jake and Diamond overcome the obstacles and dangers of sometimes having their lives played out in public view, Diamond has "a Madaris" who will protect, cherish and love her and Jake has "his Diamond".

The Case of Nancy Drew: An Adult Reader's Thoughts On OLD CLOCK

Written by Mildred Wirt Benson from an outline by Edward Stratemeyer, THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK was first published in 1930. It was the first book in the Nancy Drew series, and it and those that followed presented its heroine as a rich, headstrong, and distinctly reckless teenager who sometimes carried a pistol and who wasn't above breaking the law when it suited her purposes.

As the series progressed and other writers began to generate Nancy Drew novels, the character changed and Nancy was "toned down;" instead of flatly rich, she became reasonably affluent; recklessness was replaced by commonsense caution; and while she might be willing to bend the law a bit she would never knowingly break it. In the 1950s and 1960s the earlier novels were re-written to reflect this change in character.

THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK was significantly rewritten in 1959, and the 1959 version is the only version currently in print. Given its era, you will find nothing in the way of cell phones, computers, or the like; Nancy's fashion sense includes gloves; and she always seems find time to whip up a credible meal from scratch for friends. This particular story finds Nancy involved in a search for a missing will. She is assisted in this by her father, who is a noted attorney, and by her older friend Helen Corning. (The re-occuring characters of George, Bess, and Ned do not appear in the earliest books.) As her investigation progresses she not only finds herself at odds with unworthy heirs, but confronting furniture thieves as well.

The Nancy Drew books are not great literature by any stretch of the imagination--they are too distinctly formula for that--but they are competently written, literate, and never talk down to their target audience; they are also good "comfort reading" for grown-ups who recall their childhood reading fondly. THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK is not, at least in my opinion, the "best" of the series, but it is no less amusing for all that. Innocent fun.

one of the best books ever!

the first time i read this book, i couldn't put it down. it was so interesting. now i have the book and have read it a couple times now. i'm trying to collect the nancy drew hardbacks, and so far, i have #'s 1-15. but out of all the nancy drews that i've read, i think this one was one of the best. it's about nancy trying to find a missing will in a clock that will help nancy's friends receive money. there's so many suspenseful occurences in the book, and this is one of the best parts about it. if you love mysteries and nancy drew, then surely, you'll love this book.....also, if you're trying to collect the nancy drew hardbacks, then you should probably start out with this one, the very first one in the whole series. hope you like the book!

My Favorite Nancy Drew

When I was nine, I picked up my mother's copy of "The Hidden Staircase" (1930's edition, blue, with yellowed pages that cracked if you bent them), and finished the book in one day. My fervent wish, as I neared the book's conclusion, was that there would be other books with this character still in existence. You can't imagine my joy when I discovered those beautiful yellow spines at my neighborhood E.J. Korvette. (They were $1.19 at Korvette's - $1.50 everywhere else.) I have every hardcover Nancy Drew - and now my two oldest daughters have had a chance to experience her as well. There is much to be learned in all the books. Because of Nancy I knew the chemical symbol for gold, where Macchu Picchu was located, and a slew of other things well before we learned them at school. Love the books...and love this one the most.

Miguel de Cervantes was born on September 29, 1547, in Alcala de Henares, Spain. At twenty-three he enlisted in the Spanish militia and in 1571 fought against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto, where a gunshot wound permanently crippled his left hand. He spent four more years at sea and then another five as a slave after being captured by Barbary pirates. Ransomed by his family, he returned to Madrid but his disability hampered him; it was in debtor's prison that he began to write Don Quixote. Cervantes wrote many other works, including poems and plays, but he remains best known as the author of Don Quixote. He died on April 23, 1616.

Translated into English some 20 times since the novel appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1615, and at least five times in the last half-century, it is currently available in multiple editions (the most recent is the 1999 Norton Critical Edition translated by Burton Raffel). Yet Grossman bravely attempts a fresh rendition of the adventures of the intrepid knight Don Quixote and his humble squire Sancho Panza. As the respected translator of many of Latin America's finest writers (among them Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa), she is well suited to the task, and her translation is admirably readable and consistent while managing to retain the vigor, sly humor and colloquial playfulness of the Spanish. Erring on the side of the literal, she isn't afraid to turn out clunky sentences; what she loses in smoothness and elegance she gains in vitality. The text is free of archaisms the contemporary reader will rarely stumble over a word and the footnotes (though rather erratically supplied) are generally helpful. Her version easily bests Raffel's ambitious but eccentric and uneven effort, and though it may not immediately supplant standard translations by J.M. Cohen, Samuel Putnam and Walter Starkie, it should give them a run for their money. Against the odds, Grossman has given us an honest, robust and freshly revelatory Quixote for our times.

Grade 5 Up-- Cervantes's Don Quixote, the moniker and persona adopted by the addled Senor Quijada , who has read a few too many chivalric romances, hardly needs introduction to adults. However, most young people will have hardly heard him mentioned, much less had any firsthand contact with this larger-than-life literary creation. Bogin has taken some of the more involving, outrageous, and well-known adventures of the knight errant and his squire, Sancho Panza, and put them together into a relatively brief narrative that nonetheless is strikingly true to the tone and style of the Spanish original. Her prose, lively and at times employing modern vernacular to good effect, does full justice to Cervantes's mad Knight of the Sad Countenance. It begs reading aloud, and may well start discussion and contemplation. Boix's illustrations are delicate, detailed, gold-washed watercolors that create a kind of fairy-tale ambience. They will grab readers' attention and imaginations and direct anyone picking the book up to delve into it and to find out what's going on. Which New Translation to Choose?

Edith Grossman's is the hot new translation, but there may be a tendency to confer too much praise on a fresh reading. From what I have sampled, I have no doubt of Grossman's excellence, but this is not the "definitive" DQ (no one's is), and frankly, after some comparison of the early chapters, I've decided to spend my time with Burton Raffel's translation, now only a decade old. Raffel sometimes opts for a colloquial word or two, but it's never jarring, and his overall style seems not only less pretentious to me than Grossman's, but a superior combination of a modern reading with a traditional "tone." Tone and style are important, and Raffel sometimes makes Grossman seem too abstract or fussy, though this is difficult to describe. Raffel's phrasing is more focused and vigorous than Grossman's--though both are said to be accurate. Let me offer a couple of examples that shifted me toward Raffel:

Grossman:

"Some claim that his family name was Quixada, or Quexada, for there is a certain amount of disagreement among the authors who write of this matter, although reliable conjecture seems to indicate that his name was Quexana. But this does not matter very much to our story; in its telling there is absolutely no deviation from the truth."

Raffel:

"It's said his family name was Quijada, or maybe Quesada: there's some disagreement among the writers who've discussed the matter. But more than likely his name was really Quejana. Not that this makes much difference in our story; it's just important to tell things as faithfully as you can."

(Notice how Raffel makes immediately clear in the last sentence what Grossman so literally translates.)

Grossman:

"His fantasy filled with everything he had read in his books, enchantments as well as combats, battles, challenges, wounds, courtings, loves, torments, and other impossible foolishness, and he became so convinced in his imagination of the truth of all the countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer. He would say that El Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight but could not compare to Amadis, the Knight of the Blazing Sword, who with a single backstroke cut two ferocious and colossal giants in half."

Raffel:

"He filled his imagination full to bursting with everything he read in his books, from witchcraft to duels, battles, challenges, wounds, flirtations, love affairs, anguish, and impossible foolishness, packing it all so firmly into his head that these sensational schemes and dreams became the literal truth and, as far as he was concerned, there were no more certain histories anywhere on earth. He'd explain that Cid Ruy Diaz had been a very good knight, but simply couldn't be compared to the Knight of the Flaming Sword, who with one backhand stroke had cut in half two huge, fierce giants."

Notice that Grossman is rather fussy-sounding in the phrase: "countless grandiloquent and false inventions he read that for him no history in the world was truer." Compare with Raffel, who always seems to solve little problems like this with charm, precision, and even a little wry swagger that's so appropriate to Cervantes' intent. So my advice is to seek out both of these new translations and spend a little time with each before deciding. Don't take others' opinions that Grossman's has superseded Raffel's. Grossman avoids some of the more colloquial English one may find in Raffel, and this may please snobs, but the accuracy of Raffel's translation is not in question, and overall he seems to me to have done the best job.

Faulkner's Favorite

Faulkner said Don Quixote was his favorite book and that, along with The Bible, he dipped into it yearly. I'm not sure what Cervantes would have made of some of Faulkner's more troublesome work, but the world has designated Don Quixote the Father of the Modern Novel and perhaps the greatest novel ever. I'm a fan of this book and a habitual (some would say neurotic) comparer of translations. Since I don't read of speak Spanish, I have to rely on the English translations that have been published. There are three that are worthwhile: Ormsby's, Samuel Putnam's and now Edith Grossman's. Grossman, who is the translator of Garcia Marquez's books into English, has produced a translation that's contemporary and authentic--somehow, not an oxymoron. It has a fresher feel than Putnam's (the translation Nabokov used when teaching the book), though I wouldn't say it supplants Putnam. If you're looking for a copy of Don Quixote in English, Grossman's translation is a good first choice. She manages to maintain the feel of the language Cervantes wrote in (as far as I can tell) yet her translation, as the NY Times reviewer noted, is as readable as the latest novel from Philip Roth. You can't go wrong with Putnam or Grossman, but on this one, I have to give the nod to Grossman.

Quintessential Masterpiece of European Literature

I have read this book both in English and Spanish, and I can honestly say that it loses very little of its power, wit or message in translation. For all those who have considered reading this book, here are a few good reasons: this book is a very nuanced look at escapism and identity, a wonderful parody of knight stories, along with being a rousing (and very funny) adventure centering around the titular hero, a man who reads one too many books about knighthood and chivalry and decides to become a knight-errant himself. After recruiting a sidekick and choosing a lady to woo per narrative convention, he sets out to conquer the forces of evil, which include, among other things, giant windmills and rogue "knights". Cervantes' insight and ability to parody were both ahead of his time, and in a time where escapism and voyeurism are well and thriving, it is not difficult to imagine someone watching too many TV shows and believing they're a wild west outlaw or what-have-you. A very fascinating experience, and it works well in any language. Highly recommended.

What really goes on in the world?

As a History major in a non-SDA school, I have read many books regarding the dark ages and world history. Read American Freedom and Catholic Power by Paul Blanshard. You will see a close parallel. The Great Controversy does show you what is happenning in the religious and the secular world. Just look what happened a few days ago! The pope asked the world for forgiveness of their past sins!
Now this is a man who is supposed be God on earth, INFALLIBLE. And he is asking the world for forgiveness?
Page 571-- "The Roman Church now presents a fair front to the world, covering with apologies her record of horrible cruelties. She has clothed herself in Christlike garments; but she is unchanged. Every principle of the papacy that existed in past ages exists today. The doctrines devised in the darkest ages are still held. Let none deceive themselves. The papacy that Protestants are now so ready to honor is the same that ruled the world in the days of the Reformation, when men of God stood up, at the peril of their lives, to expose her iniquity."
What are the churches of today doing? They are stumbling over themselves to become associated with the Roman Church.
A few years back Harry Truman tried to appoint an ambassador to The Vatican, and was almost run out of office. But, Ron Reagan did it and there was very little outcry from the Protestant churches.
The World Lutheran Church just signed a concordat with the Vatican that says that Luther was wrong! The Angelicans have done a similar agreement!
One review says that she plagerized. If that is true than someone else said that these things would happen; where do they say exactly what she has said?
She said there would be a rise in spiritualism, that the churches would be teaching that the dead go to heaven or hell at their death. This book, based on these two facts alone shows that this writer to be a prophetess! I am amazed at the information she has presented in this book and when I read a newspaper and compare, it is almost as if she wrote the bylines.
The newspapers are reading like this book and people are missing it!
